Croeso i Pwllheli – Welcome to Pwllheli

History

History

Pwllheli is a small market town in Gwynedd. Pwllheli means salt water basin. Pwllheli has a rich history around the shipbuilding and fishing industries and dates back to the 18th century. Pwllheli was developed by Solomon Andrews and he helped build the promenade, roads and houses at West End. Butlins ran a holiday camp near Pwllheli and during the Second World War it became a safe haven and naval camp for HMS Glendower. During this time it acted like a hospital and treated wounded servicemen. When the Second World War was over Butlins took back the holiday camp and refurbished it as Hafan y Môr. The name Hafan y Môr means ‘Haven of the Sea’ which for the time, made complete sense! Fast forward and how the Haven group have taken over the holiday camp.

Beach

Beach

Pwllheli beach is made up of two beaches. First, South Beach is a shingle beach that stretches from Gimblet Rock along the promenade and around towards Llanbedrog. Second, Glan-y-Mor which is located at the back of the marina. This beach runs for three miles all the way to the Penychain headland. Both of these beautiful beaches have stunning views. The shingle beach is perfect at low tide to explore rockpools and the wildlife that inhabits them.
Accessibility to the beaches are limited with steps and uneven surfaces. Those with mobility issues may find this difficult. Dog restrictions to the beach may apply throughout the year. There are lifeguards who cover parts of the beach however this is subject to change.

Parking and Accessibility
